Title
Human Head and Shoulders, with Brain Partitioned and Labeled

Original Creator
Matthias Qualle (Unknown, Unknown, Anatomist)

Original Creation Date
1513

Description
This woodcut was part of Qualle’s Habes Hic Amande Textum Parvuli. Very little is known about Qualle as an anatomist. However, the woodcut served to demonstrate a human head and shoulders, with the heart and the brain exposed. The woodcut identifies some of the body parts and how they connected with the senses, particularly in reference to the brain. The senses named in the illustration include “sensus communis,” “phantasia,” “cogitative vel estimative,” “imaginative,” and “memorativa.”
