Description
This trade card shows Lillie Langtry, a well-known actress in London. This card was one of the first advertising attempts to use a celebrity’s name and image to sell a product. However, it is unknown whether Langtry was compensated for this advertisement or even consented to having her image used. During the 19th century, it became common practice to take celebrity images for advertising purposes without compensation or permission.
